Maleya: Cosmetic Dentistry: Phase One

When I was little and my permanent teeth grew in I was diagnosed with Diastema, or a gap between the two front teeth caused by a piece of skin attached to the inside top lip. Its sounds gross I know, but it wasn't so bad. The surgery when I was about four however was terrifying. Once they and clipped and removed the skin they stitched my gums and inside lip and I was on my way. The assumption was that the procedure would close my gap. Well it surely did not. As I grew so did the gap. After retainers and braces, we gave up and I accepted that I would be just fine, as long as I didn't open my mouth! Years later in middle school, my mother surprised me by telling me that she would get it fixed for me so I could finally smile with my mouth open! It was a very exciting day indeed. The dentist put bonding on my four front teeth and just like new I was a normal girl with a normal smile. However, the bonding does not last forever, here we are 15 years later and it is time to get them done again, as I am preparing my wallet, I have a guest dentist come in to see me during my regular visit, he says he need to do a procedure similar to the one I need in order to get through a program he has been working on. If he does this successfully he will be one of only about 300 dentist in the US with this type of certificate. This is the first time I have heard the word cosmetic dentistry. I just never thought about it that way. It struck me as fake and I actually considered just having the bonding removed and living with the real me, in all my gappy glory! But, then he said the magic word. FREE! Um, yes sir I would be glad to help you!
I am still in the first phase of the procedure, which included getting my teeth photographed for about 2 hours. Not really a good way to spend 2 hours, but I can't complain. I do not have access to the pictures my dentist took, at least not yet, but I have included one I took, as well as a picture of the model for my new teeth. I will continue to update you on the procedure as it comes along. Its really kinda neat!
