NBC's Today Show questions the ethics of plastic surgery makeover shows

A few years ago there was a surge in reality television programs about cosmetic surgery. The programs, such as The Swan, Extreme makeover and I Want a Famous Face, featured people, prominently women, who were undertaking extensive cosmetic surgery and extreme dieting in order to improve their appearance. In this short video the Host of NBC's Today show, Lester Holt, spoke with Dr. Richard D'Amico about such television programs and the effect they may have upon viewers. D'Amico, a plastic surgeon from New Jersey, weighs in saying that cosmetic surgery makeover shows are unethical they greatly differ from the reality of plastic surgery.
I have to agree with Dr. D'Amico in that these programs are unethical, however I disagree with what he says about the level of counseling patients receive prior to surgery. I feel that many cosmetic surgeons take advantage of a patients depression and lack of self confidence in order to make profit. These programs glamorize surgical enhancements instead of celebrating the beauty a person already has.
